The job as cook is yours if you marry me.”
Cody’s words played round and round in Ariana’s head. At first she’d thought she’d fallen asleep or been knocked and was dreaming but he’d hauled her off the hood of her car, kissed her once more, deep and passionate enough to have her quivering like a teenage girl with her first kiss.
Shit, she’d never had a kisser like Cody, certainly not Stuart whose kisses were pale, lukewarm imitations. Cody gave the word kiss new meaning. When he kissed her, he owned the word. He’d refused to say anything more, just hauled her suitcases out of her car, promised to send someone back for the rest of the stuff she’d brought with her from California.
She’d been stunned by his words, had asked him to explain himself but all he’d said was later. After dinner. Well, it was after dinner. Well after dinner. He’d taken off with Sam and Pete to go do some ranch chores or something. She’d taken care of cleaning the kitchen—thank god the ranch hands dealt with the pots and pans from the food Pete delivered to the bunkhouse.
She paced from the kitchen, through a huge dining room that could easily seat twenty, a living room, and what she termed as a cozy family room with a stone fireplace. Where was he? He couldn’t be serious about wanting to marry her. Geez, they‘d barely met.
Yet they’d been all over each other, and she had no doubt, had he wanted to fuck her out in that storm, she’d been on board. Hell, if it had been up to her, they’d have finished what that kiss started. Hearing the slam of the back door, Ariana hurried through the house and found Cody standing in the kitchen, hands on his hips, hat on his head as he stared at the pristine neatness. Pete’s attempt at cooking had left the kitchen looking like a tornado had blown through.
She stopped in the doorway, allowed herself to feast on his mile-wide shoulders, remembered how she’d felt safe and protected beneath him. His chest was rock hard, long, and lean and tapered to narrow hips and his long legs looked as strong and sturdy as twin oaks.
“It’s after dinner,” she pointed out. “I’ll be your cook but there’s no way I’m going to marry you. Let’s just say I’ve had enough of your race for now.”
Cody swept his hat off his head and tossed it onto the table. “That’s too bad. I need a wife and seeing as your fiancé took mine, you’ll have to take her place.” He pointed to the table. “Sit.”
The last thing she needed was a hunk towering over her, especially one as virile and sexy as this cowboy.
“Are you crazy? We’re strangers. I don’t think I even like you all that much!”
He advanced. “You liked me well enough earlier.”
She backed up until the counter stopped her retreat. “I was… over-emotional earlier. And so were you. That was just crazy, all the way around.
